Soft Water Facts

Hardness

Symptoms: Hard water causes scale build-up in plumbing systems, including pipes, faucets, appliances and water heaters.  The symptoms include hard water spots on glasses and shower doors. The symptoms include dry skin and brittle hair. The hard water and soap curd collect in the clothes and sheets...pretty much everything the water touches will show symptoms of hard water damage.

Causes:  As water moves through soil and rock, it dissolves very small amounts of calcium and mangnesium and holds them in solution. Calcium and magnesium dissolved in water are the two most common minerals that make water hard.

Health Concerns:   Since our body can not digest and absorb calcium in a rock form, the calcium will not be used correctly in our body. This may lead to kidney stones, clogged arteries and wekened bones.

Action Level: Water over 10.5 gpg (180 mg/l) is considered extremely hard, but savings are realized at levels over 3 gpg (51 mg/l).
